Jesus knows your pain.

One thing I am learning about, that I don’t think I’ve understand the depth of, is Jesus being our Great High Priest. Because many modern Christians haven’t been around priests, it can be hard to understand why Jesus took on that role.

“Therefore, he {Jesus} had to be like his brothers & sisters in every way, so that he could become a merciful & faithful high priest in matters pertaining to God, to make atonement for the sins of the people. For since he himself has suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are tempted.
‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭2:17-18‬

We know Jesus had to become human & fulfill the law perfectly so that when He died on The Cross, He was the spotless Lamb that could take sin upon Himself in place of all humanity. He died so we didn’t have to.

But there’s more.

Jesus didn’t only live as a human so He could die in our place. He lived as a human so He could feel what we feel, live as we live and be tempted as we are tempted. He subjected Himself to temptation so that He could identify with us as we battle our flesh.

It’s amazing to me that The God who breathed the universe into motion allowed Himself to go through the aches & pains of life on earth so that HE could be a merciful, empathetic High Priest. So HE could sit at the right hand of The Father & know exactly what we feel when we lift our prayers to Him with tear stained cheeks.

It wasn’t enough for Him to be aware of our pain from afar. No. He stepped right in the middle of it & experienced it Himself. Even though there may be many days where we think “God doesn’t get it. He doesn’t know what this feels like.” Be assured friend. He does. He went through years of heartache long before he met The Cross.

He faced rejection, persecution, abandonment, abuse, temptation, isolation, you name it, He experienced it. Yes, even fear & despair tapped on the door of The Almightys heart in The Garden of Gethsemane.

This Resurrection Sunday I think we should celebrate Jesus being our Passover Lamb. We should celebrate Him being our Savior – but in addition to that, might we celebrate Him being our High Priest & our friend who just gets it??

What a mighty & loving God we serve.

A God who is well acquainted with our pain!

A God who knows!
