Wisdom is a heart issue, not a head issue.

Most of my life I have believed a person who is wise is someone who is very smart. They learn easily. They grasp difficult concepts with minimal effort. They just have a knack for knowledge.

For me, wisdom has always been a head issue not a heart issue. But after reading several scriptures on wisdom, I’m realizing that couldn’t be further from the truth.

Proverbs 1 says “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom”. Proverbs 3 tells us to “trust in the lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.” We also see in proverbs 4 that we are to “guard our hearts above all else for it is the source of life.”

Right smack dab in a book about wisdom is several references to the heart. Why? What does the heart have to do with wisdom?

Well, if the fear of The Lord is the beginning of wisdom, then it goes without saying that we would have to trust Him and not lean on our own understanding to get real wisdom.

To gain real wisdom, we have to surrender our ways & our heart and believe the God who created us is smarter and greater than we can fathom. Once we do, then we are on the path to finding what wisdom is all about.

Wisdom isn’t a head issue. It’s a heart issue.

If we ever get to a place where we think we are smart & don’t need God, that proves how dumb we really are. Our brains were created by Him. The fact that we are free willed, thinking beings is because of Him.

We can’t hope to achieve wisdom in this life without having a heart bent towards knowing the source of life and truth. It’s just that simple.

For me, I’ve realized that Wisdom will never be a matter of what you know … but who you know.
